Heat and ice
Ice reduces swelling and short-term pain and eases muscle spasms. Wrap ice or an ice pack in a towel and use it for no more than 20 minutes at a time, in the first 24 to 48 hours after an injury.
Heat loosens stiff joints, relaxes muscle spasms and brings blood flow to the area. Don’t use heat on swollen or bruised tissue.
Heat and ice aren’t right for everyone. Ask your doctor first if you have diabetes, poor circulation, numbness or areas of reduced feeling, Raynaud’s syndrome, rheumatoid arthritis, a heart or blood-pressure condition, deep vein thrombosis, dermatitis or open wounds.
